Deepening Transatlantic Cooperation

The war in Ukraine is a stark reminder that the transatlantic alliance is as important today as it has ever been.  But beyond the military domain, if the EU and the US are to be leaders in the creation of cutting-edge technologies, they must now join forces.

 
Bruce Stokes suggests a set of innovative initiatives modelled on the US’ highly successful Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

He calls for a transatlantic research effort for batteries, chips, agriculture and health – from TARPA-B and TARPA-C to TARPA-A and TARPA-H.

This would benefit not only Americans and Europeans – but also the citizens of the world meet future challenges.

The world faces many challenges. More intense cooperation between the United States and the EU can help solve them.

The Ukraine crisis is a stark reminder that the transatlantic alliance is as important today – as both a military and economic partnership – as it has ever been in the post-World War II-era.

 
What focuses the mind

But U.S.-European cooperation need not and should not be limited to immediate geopolitical crises. The renewed experience of standing together in the current confrontation with Russia should be a template for allied solidarity in the years ahead.

After all, Europe and the United States confront shared challenges posed by China, future pandemics and climate change.
